Sota VPN not working: what to check and how to fix it
When Sota Connect won't connect, or connects but the internet doesn't work, the cause is almost always one of a handful of common ones. They are listed below in the order worth checking: one of the first six usually does it. After that come the specific cases: the "failed to connect to the server" error, a computer, mobile data and Telegram. At the end is what to tell support so the question gets solved with your first message.

Six quick checks first
- Service status. Open sotastatus.com. If an incident is in progress, don't change any settings, just wait. Outages and blocks are also posted in the @sotavpn channel.
- Subscription. Log in to the dashboard with your key. The home page shows whether the subscription is active. If it has expired, renew it: the app connects on its own, nothing needs reinstalling.
- Another server. Tap the server bar at the top of the home screen and pick another country or "Best server". One server may be overloaded or blocked by your provider while the rest work fine.
- Restart. Turn the VPN off with the button, close the app completely, open it again and connect. On a phone it's easier to reboot the device.
- App version. Censorship bypass fixes ship in updates, so an old version can stop connecting. Update Sota Connect from the App Store, Google Play or the links on the Download VPN page.
- Another network. Switch from Wi-Fi to mobile data or the other way round. If the VPN works on one network and not on the other, the problem is the network or the provider, not the app. What to do in that case is covered below.
The "Failed to connect to the server" error
This is how the app tells you it couldn't establish a connection to the chosen server. Most often the server is blocked by your provider or temporarily overloaded.
- Pick another country in the location list. Try two or three servers in a row: blocks differ from provider to provider.
- Make sure no other VPN or proxy is running. Two VPN clients at once get in each other's way: turn the second one off and connect again.
- On Windows, open the settings and switch Connection mode from "Tunnel" to "System proxy". If that works, an antivirus or firewall is blocking the virtual network adapter: add Sota Connect to its exceptions and switch back to "Tunnel".
- Check the date and time on the device. If they are wrong, a secure connection can't be established.
VPN connected, but sites don't open
The status says "Connected", but pages don't load or only some of them open. Here the settings are to blame, not the server.
- Change the DNS. In the app settings pick a different DNS server: Google or Quad9 instead of Cloudflare, then reconnect.
- Check split tunneling. If it's on in "Through the tunnel" mode, only the sites and apps from the list go through the VPN, everything else goes directly. For normal use turn split tunneling off or switch the mode to "Bypass the tunnel".
- Kill Switch. If the internet vanished completely right after the VPN disconnected, that's the "Block internet without VPN" option doing its job. Turn the VPN back on or turn the option off in the advanced settings.
- Network stack. On Windows, in the advanced settings try "System" instead of "Mixed". This one is for experienced users: if it didn't help, put it back.
Not working on a computer
On Windows and macOS the usual causes are joined by system protection and leftovers from other VPNs.
- Antivirus and firewall. They can block the network adapter install or Sota Connect itself. Add the app to the exceptions, or turn the protection off while you test.
- Other VPN clients. VPNs installed earlier leave their network adapters and services behind. Remove or disable them and restart the computer.
- macOS. On the first connection the system asks you to allow the app to add a VPN configuration. Without that permission the connection won't come up: check in "System Settings" under "VPN" that Sota Connect is allowed.
- Reinstall. If the app doesn't launch or broke after an update, remove it and install it again from the official link, the steps are in the guide "How to download Sota VPN on a PC". After a reinstall the key is entered again.
Not working on mobile data
Mobile carriers block VPNs harder than home providers, and each has its own list. That's why everything works at home on Wi-Fi and nothing works on the go.
- Go through several servers: usually some of them are reachable on your carrier.
- After changing networks reconnect the VPN by hand: sometimes the app stays attached to a network that is already gone.
- Check the phone settings: data saver mode and background activity limits for Sota Connect on Android switch the VPN off in the background.
Telegram doesn't open
Telegram uses its own protocol, so it sometimes behaves differently from websites.
- Open Telegram settings, go to "Data and Storage", then "Proxy Settings", and turn the proxy off if it's on: it overrides the VPN.
- Check split tunneling: if Telegram is in the list on the "Apps" tab in "Bypass the tunnel" mode, it goes around the VPN.
- Restart Telegram after the VPN connects: it doesn't always re-establish open connections on its own.
Is it down for everyone today?
Sometimes the problem isn't on your side. To tell a mass outage from a local problem:
- Check the status page and the @sotavpn channel: outages and major blocks are posted there right away.
- If the website itself doesn't open, that's a domain block, not a service outage. The app and your key keep working, and the new site address is always in the channel and from the @sota bot, details in the guide "Official Sota VPN website".
- Ask in the @sotavpnchat chat: if the problem is widespread, people are already discussing it there.
What to tell support
If nothing helped, message @sotasupport. To get it solved faster, include right away:
- Your device and system: for example Windows 11, iPhone or Android.
- The Sota Connect version, the chosen server and the connection mode.
- What exactly happens: the error text or the step where the connection hangs, and which network you're connecting through.
- Whether the VPN works on another network and on another device with the same key.
- Send your access key only in a private message to support and only if asked. Never post it in the public chat.
Good to know
- One key works on 10 devices at the same time. Once the limit is reached, a new device won't connect: remove old ones in the dashboard under "Key Management", in the "My Devices" list.
- After any settings change turn the VPN off and on again: some options only apply on a new connection.
- Don't enter your key or download "ready configurations" on sites that promise to fix Sota VPN. The genuine site never asks for anything like that.
Frequently asked questions
- Sota VPN isn't working today, what happened?
- Check sotastatus.com and the @sotavpn channel first. If it's quiet there, the problem is local: change the server, restart the app and check the subscription in the dashboard. If the website doesn't open, the domain is blocked, but the app keeps working.
- Why does it say "Failed to connect to the server"?
- The chosen server is unreachable from your network: blocked by the provider or overloaded. Pick another country or "Best server", turn off other VPNs, and on Windows try the "System proxy" mode.
- The VPN is connected but there's no internet. Why?
- Usually it's the settings: change the DNS server, check the split tunneling mode and the Kill Switch option. Reconnect after every settings change.
- Sota VPN doesn't work on mobile data, what should I do?
- Go through several servers, carriers have their own block lists, and reconnect the VPN after changing networks. On Android lift the background restrictions for Sota Connect.
